The rope of bells jingle against the glass door. “Hello?” I call inside, waking the puppies and kittens from their naps.
“Hello,” an old man pokes his head out from behind the dog food aisle. “What can I do for you?”
“I saw this sign on your window up front,” I explain, pointing to the white poster board hanging on the large window, red letters printed on the front reading “FISH FOR SALE.” “I want to get a dog, but my mom and dad said I need to start with a fish.”
The old man’s face lights up with glee as he walks to the fish tanks. “Oh, yes! Perfect timing, actually. We just got it in.”
“‘It’? Aren’t all of your fish for sale?”
“Oh, there’s only one fish for sale. Ever since yesterday, we only have the one available, I’m afraid.”
“Why’s that?”
The old man pulls out a large fish net. “It ate them all.”
